How many cutlery sets do you need per guest?

The short answer is one set per guest, plus about fifteen percent. The longer answer is that fifteen percent is doing two different jobs, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

Every set we sell is a fork, a knife and a spoon — the 150 piece box is fifty of each. So the arithmetic below works in sets of three, not in individual pieces.

Start with the headcount

One guest, one set. That is the baseline, and it holds whether it is a sit-down dinner or a buffet where people pick up cutlery twice.

Then add the margin

Fifteen percent covers two things:

Loss. A fork goes in the bin with the plate. Someone drops a knife on the floor and takes a fresh one rather than picking it up.
Seconds. If a guest keeps their fork between courses and takes a clean one for dessert, that is a second set for part of the room.

For a plain buffet with one course and no dessert, ten percent is usually enough. For a served dinner with a dessert course, go to twenty.

Note the jump between 40 and 50 guests. At 40 you fit inside a single box; at 50 you are buying two, and the second box is half spare. If the number is close to a box boundary, it is usually cheaper to plan the menu around the box you already have than to buy a box and use a quarter of it.

Where the boxes stop being the right unit. Past about two hundred guests, carton quantities beat single boxes on both price and packing — that is a wholesale conversation rather than a listing one.

What about the tables themselves?

Headcount, times 1.15, divide by 50, round up. That is how many 150 piece boxes to order.
